I have been offered a 3 element Yagi beam for £30 due to my mate getting a 4 element is it any better than the 5/8 gainmaster ?

A yagi is a directional antenna so it will be better in the direction you're pointing it. A little bit like a torch focuses light in one direction as apposed to a ordinary light bulb. You'll gain in one direction but lose in another so a rotator is required. It's much more of a DX antenna than a chat to your mates all around you antenna.

As Gary says ideal for DX but not good for local. The Yagi will normally be horizontal and gainmaster is vertical.

The simple answer, Get Both!
A yagi will really help with the long distance dx and the vertical for when conditions are not so good and its only local stuff

A yagi will wipe the floor with a vertical for DX. It's not even funny how far apart they are.
Also you benefit from it being directional so when there's a DX station in the USA and you've got your beam pointing towards it you can actually hear it because of how much signals to the side and rear are attenuated. With a vertical often you can't hear the DX because of European stations.
For 11m put it up between 16ft to 32ft. When you go above a wavelength high you end up in the wierd situation where the nearest station you can work is over 1000 miles away which isn't as great as it sounds. Been there, played that game.

Hope to be playing with a beam this year , wife said no way for it to go up at home, so the Summer house/ weekend cottage we have i can put one up there, will try it on a 30m flag pole first and see what it does, will be close to a lake, but at the back will have thick forest area, only get to the location from Spring onwards, some good advice came from the 1st post.

Some great advice for you there Michael. (We've got some mighty helpful members here at Charlie Tango!)
If one of my mates had offered me a beam for £30, I'd have ripped his arm off taking it away!
