Nice one Martin.
I had one or maybe two of the Cobra 19 straight AM rigs back in the day. Great straight forward little rigs where you concentrated on the conversation, not the rig.
I always preferred AM, (and SSB), as once you gain a 'radio ear' you can hear even the weakest of signals and strangely don't hear the ssshhh white noise of the cosmic background radiation.
Nice memories as well and makes this particular rig worth more to you. I remember you mentioning Barry before, nice to have fond memories of someone that played an important part in your life.
Thanks for posting mate, nice to see and hear about it.

Thanks Victor, yep one of his many many radios he had just something to chuck in the car or lorry it was , so it needed a good clean lol but after over 40 years it still worked great without a problem, I forgot how for its size how heavy it is ,alot heavier than these modern multimodes old radio built to last .

Nice how these older radios carry on Martin.
The old, old stuff have valves that pack up and beeswax capacitors that dry out. The new stuff have complex microprocessors, firmware updates and often pack up for no apparent reason whatsoever?! We lived through a unique time and those couple of chips and handful of transistors in that rig will probably outlive us all!
Perfect mobile rig, no teeny buttons to push, tiny screens to read, menus to navigate or other such.
I'll bet Barry's looking down chuffed that his old rig is still running strong and still with family.

Well considering that the Mid band now was the the same band as now which was classed as the FCC in the U.S but on AM/SSB only, but we calling the Euro now for some reason I get what you mean Stephen, and yes I agree CB back then in pre legal days IMHO was 1000% better than what it is now .

Nice bit of history there, love the old radios, on the topic of 22ch rigs, can still find them for sale here in Finland, they seem to be in good supply still on the flee bay net shops.

Thanks Glenn for the compliment on my story, as for 23ch AM radios I was looking on French Ebay and there was loads ,all at very silly high prices though, actually my cousin in the story in the post and I started off on a 23ch radio which we shared lol , also its surprising how many people don't about the early 23ch radios .

Don't think any rig I had would last 10 seconds in that paint shaker

Graeme ,no joke that was the first radio my cousin and I had which we shared ,a Royce (23ch), it wasn't the model in the vid but that was make we had ,must admit the old radios of those times where built like bricks some of them very heavy and sturdy not plasticity like the new radios of today .

Martin,
Definitely showing your age now – lol
But I must agree, rigs nowadays are made to a cost, cheap plastic and set to self-destruct after the warranty runs out

I love a bit of old school gear, having grown up around it where it often (in the day) existed in the shack with old military wartime/post-war surplus and some LMR conversions, some pure home brews and hybrids (especially for UHF) of taking good Rx and Tx modules from an LMR and re-purpose them with homebrew intermediate circuit designs. One benefit of that, was you could find cavity filters you could carry over which otherwise were costly luxuries.
I've an old pre-digital/pre-trunking era Pye (last of the true Pye gear) that is a jungle of cavity filters, seems like every section has least two to adjust/align, in some places up to 8 in 2x4 arrangements that got logic switched into various combos.
Now those, bearing in mind they were miniature CF's as well, would cost a few body parts and a few organs to obtain as NOS let alone as a matched set as chassis pulls.
My favourite old school CB gear is actually the most unusable, my old 934 MHz gear.
Have an example of every production rig, a few prototypes and even rarer - examples of the notorious unofficial RefTec built sub boards that 'under the table' end up supplied to N Ireland and were the Tx/Rx remote trigger kit used by certain activists back in the day - the ones that used frequencies nobody even considered you'd use. So that incorporates a few Japanese items, mostly non-production prototypes and the few we ever saw here and those production items are hen's teeth to get like RefTec stuff.
And let's not forget the 'Burny Burnies', the Burndept gear that had Phoenix like qualities in how when they developed a fault, it was fire extinguisher time, and if you were lucky some of the surviving guts were fishgutted to repair less ashen damaged examples.
I did a lot of VHF/UHF conversions of those for TNC usage as they made good candidates for Packet Radio fit and forget rigs (after a few extra ventilation mods and plenty of fire retardant precautions). They weren't remotely good by PMR standards, but they were easily over engineered as 45/50W rated units so where pretty well under stressed for AX25 ops, but were easily up to very extended high duty cycle exchanges where a link was so bad that even sending 1K of ASCII could take a day to exchange error corrected.
