Subject: Marks out of 10 for your 20m band set up Sat Jun 12, 2021 2:29 pm
I am trying to work out what the average ham in the UK uses for 20m and if they are happy with station performance, as far as it is possible. ( are we all on beams or wires, how much power and how happy are you with your performance) All licence levels of course welcome...Amateurs what is your 20m setup and are you happy with it. I suggest a simple system of out of 10 - copy and paste this in with your set up and your level of long distance dx (more than 3,000 miles contacts)
My antenna is a and is a /10 is has dB gain on 20m My RF power is Watts My long dx satisfaction for RX is /10 My long dx for TX ability / satisfaction is /10 My qth noise floor in S points is Overall out of 10 for my long distance dx satisfaction is a /10 I have been operating as a ham on 20m band for months / years.
I am not really certain about my own set up yet cause I have not been using it long and this will depend on hours spent dxing but here is my provisional info as close as I can...
My antenna is a 1/2 wave EF and is a 5/10 overall is has 0 dB gain on 20m My RF power is 100 in Watts My long dx satisfaction (3,000 miles plus) RX is 8/10 My long dx TX ability / satisfaction (3,000 miles plus) is 5/10 My qth noise floor in S points is S0 to S3 Overall out of 10 for my long distance dx satisfaction is a 5 or 6 /10

I dont really like 20m and dont have an antenna up for it all the time , infact I havent used 20m since the 2020 ARRL INT DX Contest My antenna is a HEXBEAM @ 6m agl and is a 8 /10 is has 3.8dBd gain on 20m My RF power is max 400- 100 in contest Watts My long dx satisfaction for RX is 8 /10 My long dx for TX ability / satisfaction is 8 /10 My qth noise floor in S points is 1>3 (preamp2) Overall out of 10 for my long distance dx satisfaction is a 8 /10 I have been operating as a ham on 20m band for as little as possible months / years. . If you can get away with a 3.25 metre turning radius and its 3D profile its the best bang for bucks antenna for 6>20m IMO and whilst propagation is everything I did work ZL on 20m with the base plate at 3m agl a couple of years back with 100w.

My antenna is a loft mounted fan dipole for 10m through 20m inc 11m and is a 7/10 is has <0dB gain on 20m My RF power is max 10 Watts My long dx satisfaction for RX is 7/10 My long dx for TX ability / satisfaction is 3/10 My qth noise floor in S points is S2 - S3 Overall out of 10 for my long distance dx satisfaction is a 5/10 I have been operating as a ham on 20m band for 2 months.
- The 20m element is made from a very old bit of wire which is wrinkled, and doglegged on one end by a couple of feet to fit in the loft. Far from optimal, but has a low swr so don't need to lose any power into a tuner. Can't fault it for Euro contacts.. only one that I tried and failed to make contact with so far was Raisa when she was doing a live utube feed, but then she did have a half the world pileup going on.
If I was grading TX ability / satisfaction for 15m & 10m it would be a lot higher, my furthest contacts have been made on those bands.

My antenna is a Cobweb and is a 8/10 has some gain on 20m My RF power is upto 100Watts My long dx satisfaction for RX is 9 /10 My long dx for TX ability / satisfaction is 8/10 My qth noise floor in S points is 3 for 20metres Overall out of 10 for my long distance dx satisfaction is a 8/10 I have been operating as a ham on 20m band for 3 years. I'm digital only using FT8/FT4.
I can hear a lot more than I can get back to but have worked plenty so far. FT4 appears to get more DX than FT8, I have far more on FT4. Currently looking for US states and counties.
