Subject: President McKinley power output Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:05 am
Good morning all, I've just set up with a McKinley rig in expanded mode. I've a question regarding power input and output. I've been told that power output in expanded mode is higher than otherwise would be. I assumed that expanded meant an increase in frequencies available, is there also an increase in the 4W and 12W power output? I've metered the input current which reads for each modulation AM, FM, USB and LSB as follows: Rx - 0.36, 0.37, 0.48 and 0.49 amp Tx - 4.7, 6.2, 2.5, 3.5 amp
Do these look reasonable?
Any views are very welcome
Peter

Yes it also increases power the output signigficantly to around 20-21W SSB and 26/27W FM. There are two separate adjuster pots for the power on each mode on the board, one for legal mode, one for expanded mode. I wound mine down on FM because I want it to last and a difference between 20W and 27W is barely recognisable on the S meter to the other end.

Thanks for that Conor, it confirms what i've read. Strange that there's no mention of this in the user manual, such as it is. I'll take a look at the pots when I get a little more familiar with the rig. Cheers!

There is mention of it in the service manual in the section for alignment procedures. It tells you how to set the radio up, what to adjust and what to set it at.

Thanks once again Conor, I'll be looking at this manual.

The "export mode" adjustment procedures and adjustment points are referred to as USB/LSB/FM/AM (RU) in the service manual procedures for setting up each mode.
Page 14 I believe: https://simonthewizard.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/service-manuals_service-manual-mc-kinley-eu-gd-13-06-2019.pdf
AM is supposed to be 10W carrier with no modulation FM is supposed to be 20W LSB/USB is supposed to be 24W.
Mine was OK on LSB and USB, AM was 20W deadkey which results in the power meter swinging backwards when you talk and FM was at 27W. AM will not go down anywhere near 10W when adjusting it so it seems it will always "swing backwards" when talking in AM mode. Sounds OK though and I don't use it so not end of the world.

You're a star Conor! OK, I may step the FM back a tad if I find the same thing although I expect that 27 watts isn't going to stress it too much it's best to be safe. Being where I am in the hills of Derbyshire I seem to be getting a ton of continental skip and not a hell of a lot from the UK. Having said that, I've had some really strong FM signals from not far away, so probably not skip.
LSB 30 to 40 are busy but mostly foreign stuff with some overflow into neighbouring channels so they're probably on amps.
