I think as Tony has mentioned 27.275 USB, (Ch.27 EU), is supposed to be the 'agreed' UK SSB calling channel and the Europeans are often heard on 27.285 USB, (Ch.28 EU).
My HF set has been out of action for a little while now but when it was and there was a lift on I usually used anywhere that was clear on the top end of 'mids', called CQ and hoped someone was scanning around to reply. Usually worked and a heck of a lot clearer than the usual crowded 'calling' channels.

One of the most popular and well established ssb calling frequency/channels on the eu band (also referred to as mid-band) is 27.385 (ch38) on lsb. It is the calling channel for the Americans. It is definitely worth a listen when the propagation is running that way.

There seems to be nothing on any of the 11m band the last couple of days when I've had a listen , just a couple of faint signals on 27.555 . Which I assume is down to conditions?
