Hi all,
I don't know anything about radios, and don't own any yet, i registered on this forum so that i can learn more. I had played with CB radios as a child but that's about it.
Recently I saw that some countries (including the UK) have run a simulation of a grid down blackout type event (preparing for one), which made me think about communications. I was talking with some people about radios in a telegram chat, and a few of them said PMR is what one should invest in for a survival scenario, such as a grid down or other similar context. I would have thought CBs are longer range and so would be a better investment, but they thought more people would have PMRs and so I'd be better off...
In the end i decided that I'll try and find some local radio clubs or forums so that I can learn a little more about radios before deciding what types to get etc, and so here i am.
I saw that many new members request a call sign but I have no idea what that is, I tried searching the forum but I'm still learning how to use the search function properly, so if anyone could sum up to me what these call sigh requests are, and where would be the best place to start learning about radios in general I'd be super grateful!
Many thanks!

Hi there and Welcome to Charlie Tango.
You certainly don't require a call sign to enjoy free forms of radio such as CB and PMR but there are times when it can help. One of our members here produced a video a while back explaining a bit about call signs and in particular a Charlie Tango call sign that might be helpful to you. Link below :-

If you require a call sign you only have to ask and Admin here will happily oblige. All we ask is some basic details such as your name etc.
There's plenty of information on the internet regarding radio usage and special interests so might be worth a search about than wait for any responses here. I'm pretty sure though that someone might pipe up with something specific if it lays in their interest path.
Enjoy yourself no matter where your radio interest lay.
All the best, Victor

Thanks Victor, I really appreciate your reply. It's difficult to know where to begin with all things radio. There's so much technical things to no about bands, then the different types of gear etc.
I'll watch the video that you linked me about call signs, anything that I can learn will be helpful for me at this stage.
Thank you for the warm welcome!
