Unfortunately the 'inflation rate' doesn't account for everything Wayne. Volatile stock market prices, (metal prices shot up on the world banking crisis and more recently with Covid), world demand and availability of resources are always a factor and don't forget recent huge rises in electricity costs which add to processing prices.
Not always as simple as it first seems and of course there'll always be someone sat on stock ready to take advantage of price increases no matter what it originally cost them.(Never forgetting the proverbial 'warehousing' costs.)
You only have to look at price rises when some 'investors' pile into a new 'skyscraper' in Dubai or other such paying whatever it takes to complete their 'project' with others equally happy to fulfill them. Get enough of those and it easily affects world prices.
If you need it, you buy it.....and of course we get to a certain age when we like to grumble about rising prices.
Never forget, we're just clever upright monkeys on a ball of rock with finite resources hurtling through the void of space.

My son was building custom roll cages before Covid..... The the prices almost tripled on the material, And that to what he needed to make as profit, he had to give up. Metal and wood has gone through the roof. I bought enough hardwood flooring to do the house 2 years ago. It cost $4,000 in materials. Now it is almost $8,000 for the same amount! Crazy eh?

I think as long as you buy good quality components that are fit for purpose, that's all that really matters! Shopping around is definitely the best thing to do.

It has gotten $$ here as well, Time to "network" on some of these parts. I had a "friend" fabricate some brakets for me for a different project. I was glad to pay the up price, for I knew where most of the money was going. Kids, food, ect. As opposed to some knock off, fast manufacturing supply chain contractor. Most likely a better quality part in those cases when one "outsources" to a local "friend". It does take longer for the initial project, but sometimes those are the "thinking it through" times while waiting on parts being made.....
