A good choice to start with. You should get some good contacts with the coverage and modes of that radio. I have the same mobile aerial not used it for some time but it worked well and especially when i went up on high ground. And welcome to the forum only just noticed you are new here. Any problems just ask there is loads of knowledge on here.

I've used the CRE 8900 version of the Alinco 135 with a Sirio 4000 and a standard coffin mic. I threw away the K-PO NW-532 because I got the same results using the standard mic. I now use a Anytone AT-5555 with a standard mic and get very good audio reports.
Using both radios (with no amps) I have contacted as far as South America
Welcome to Charlie Tango and enjoy the radio

I'll see what standard mic is like and can send back 532 if no difference for me. Cheers for the pointer.

Stuart Not sure on the standard mic but some of them have a foam insert that people take out to make them sound better. Like i say not sure if the mic you get with that radio is the same. Somebody will put me right soon i hope.

One more question before I press buy on ebay. Does this rig need a separate swr/meter or is internal one suffice. I'll be running standard power through turbo 5000 antenna. The reason I ask is "I'm getting skint"

The inbuilt one is not that good i don't think but it will give you some idea. Also i think they have high swr protection so you should be ok.

Hi Stuart
I strongly suggest an exterior SWR meter (and patch lead). They are not that expensive and so much better than the one on a radio. You can choose to get one that shows power, or a digital meter if you like. But a basic one is just fine.
I consider the built in SWR to be something that gives me an idea if something has gone wrong - I forgot to put the antenna up, the coax got twisted, etc.
I hope that helps :-)
That looks a great set up. Good luck with it!
In time, you might decide to use a different connector to 12 volts. Many people report interference, the plug falling out or some other problem. But just get on the air for now !
Many people use 'power poles' - but any connection is good as long as it can take the current. Many wire directly to the battery (with a fuse) to reduce interference. I have a wire direct to the battery and a connector in the vehicle. I can choose what to connect to that 12 volt output - I have one that is simply a 3 metre extension.
All the best Skip

Still waiting on alinco 135 to be delivered but tried sirio turbo up on local mountain with a cheaply bought intek hr-5500. Still waiting for some more goodies but at least it's a start. Brazil and Eastern block heard.

Tried dxing but people say my modulation is v. V. Low . I'll have to figure out if it's settings or because of standard mic. Trinidad is knocking my needles out. Just to add my signal 20miles crow fly was 5-9 or 9-5 (its been a long time) but very quiet mod. I've set it back to factory settings since and it's the same. Some hear me some don't but needle is there. Am Freq. was contact.

Well not been on since getting my radios and other stuff together. Checked everything out. Flicked through and got a fellow CT from Greece. Unit 318. All the better qso as it was getting 5-9 reports from him and various greek stations on **FM**. Not bad with 3 Watts and a 5/8 Dipole. And a intek hr 5500. Glad to be back!

my cre 8900 is a great radio but beg to differ, the mic that came with it are awful very poorly made and when i tx it would drop a channel, same on 9900 so i bought power mics for them all telcom 1000 power echo mic, and both work very well turn the mic gain down on the menu, to about 35 and it stops over modulation, and i have no bad reports with them got them from knights a plug on and a free battery.
