Hello All, I'm New & an absolute beginner. My name is Johnny Mobasher & user name Johnny Dollar ( long story! ) . Nowadays I live in Birmingham England ( Edgbaston ) . I have been interested in CB radios for a while & have watched a few Youtube Beginner videos. I don't have any equipments. I need guidance on where & how to start! If I ask a question , it will probably be a silly one as I'm truly a beginner. So, where do i start!? at First I thought I should start by getting a couple of Motorola handsets for just family use ( i was chatting to a shop manager as they all use Motorola Handsets to talk to each other in very Large stores ) But I also leant that there are Home Desk sets with antennas etc for a wider use! So, it's all questions. where do I start please?

Hi Johnny and welcome. There's no such thing as a silly question. Everyone had to start somewhere. And I'm new too
I started with a Baofeng UV5R recently, cheap off ebay for around £23. You can listen to ham radio, PMR, marine and local businesses etc. I have only tried transmitting on PMR as i can hear others and I don't have a ham licence. I bought another UV5R and have fun chatting to my grandson and handy for going away.
I have now gone sideband with a CRT SS 9900 and that's probably your best bet. You can go CB 40 or USB. I think you could expect to pay between £150-£200 for a CRT SS 6900 and antenna for example, but worth it rather than a standard CB radio with a carp antenna.
Good luck and more experienced members will probably chip in,

As Sharpshooter said, a CB radio with usb lsb am and fm will be good for you, or if unsure on the cost and antenna situation, as in what will next door say if a 8m ariel goes up, get a scanner and see what you here in the home area and go out and about,

Hi Johnny, welcome to the CTDX group, you need to ask yourself a few questions before buying. Do you want a homebase station or mobile, do you want to do both, as previously said a multimode (am, fm, ssb) radio will fulfill both options. How much do you want to spend, there's a vast difference in prices, its a case of you pay for what you get and I don't know what your budget is. A mobile station would be the cheapest option to build but as I've said buy the best you can afford, hope this helps. By the way your QTH is Edgbaston 73s Steve.

Thanks Steve. BOTH. mobile & homebase . I think i can spend a few hundred pounds to try & get a decent start. If you think the mobile strat up is BEST though, happy to do that. just to show a beginner I am , what does QTH stands for please?

Hey Johnny, the mobile option can also be used as a home base with some additional add ons like a power supply, QTH is ham radio slang for what is your longitude and latitude but is used on cb to ask where your operating from ie my current QTH is or my home QTH is, in your case Edgbaston. 73 Steve.
