Hi all, I been around here for a while picking up lots of good info but not posted before so please excuse me if it seems a bit of a silly question. I am going to receive a CB radio later this week (gift from a friend) and was wondering if my Sigma SE-HF-X80 antenna would do the job. I remember from years back I had silver rods and the like but very rusty now. Got a Ham receiver and just waiting for my exam. Thanks for any tips.

Hi. You will almost certainly need an ATU to use that antenna to talk on the CB frequencies. No problem plugging the rig into the antenna to just have a listen though

I have the brother of that the SE-HF-X360 same thing but in fiberglass.
Have tried it on the 11m band with a tuner and to be totally honest it is ce@p. You would be better cleaning an old silver rod up and try it. The silver rod on the other hand how to explain well i have 2 ham friends that use them on ham bands and a tuner is requires but they do make contacts with them.

By all means give it a go then. I never got any contacts on 11m with mine could only just get a m8 5 miles away on ssb with it. No worth buying a tuner to try it but if you have one the give it a go.

The consensus amongst most I speak to on air is "do not buy a modern silver rod as they are carp and bend in the slightest wind". Antron 99 amongst others are better options apparently.

There is house not far from me that has an assortment of antenna's up and I did notice that the Silver rod style antenna did bend in the last lot of high winds and now leans over at a jaunty angle (making the house look like it's fast )
