Hi Craig,
There's been a few discussions around the A99 on the forum in the past with only one mention of the top extension and then that was a recommendation not to bother.
I had a quick scout around the old internet and some say that it made not much difference whilst others complained that it ruined the ability to match the antenna across a wider range of frequencies.
Does look like it might be worth saving your money judging by that. (?)
Hopefully a member here has some first hand experience to give you. I'm simply scanning the forum for unanswered posts and maybe help out if and when I can.
I wish you luck with it all.
All the best, Victor

Can second that. I tried one, it made no noticeable difference apart from to my wallet. Spend the money on getting a longer pole to put it on.

Thanks for the reasurance guys, did you have to mess around with the tuning for SWR or leave alone as it is out the box?

Hi Craig,
From what I can tell around the internet and the antenna instructions it seems that a lot of people were able to use the antenna straight out of the box.
Always worth a read of the instructions beforehand, that piece of paper or pamphlet that never gets read until something isn't right.
Also best not to get too hung up about SWR as it seems that many often chase that fabled 1:1 without real reason. If you take a look at the table provided in the link below you'll see why many don't even worry unless the SWR is over 2:1..........
http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs/SWRLOSS.htm
If you get a SWR of around 1.5:1 then you're pretty good to go.
Have fun.
All the best, Victor

I have only ever tried one for a short time but i think i set the rings in the middle and it was not to far off. Reason it was only a short time was i used to do all the local repairs and the odd one by post. Our local shop well he also did the markets with a stall. Well he would give me any new aerial to try and i got to keep them so always calling my m8 Rob to run up the roof to swap over and he did run frightened the sheite out of me so i stopped watching lol. Reason i was given them was people would go to him to buy an aerial the one Alan Pilot is using. Didn't dawn on me for some time but did make some cash on the sales lol.

I presume you have your a99 up already but if not or you take it down again coat it in varnish. Any type will do as it protects the fibreglass from crazing and letting in water.Had my a99 over 10yrs and it performs well...use it portable and still impressed.

. I agree with Cozzmik.
TOP TIP
Always varnish your A99. I was gifted one about 6 years ago and within seconds of touching it I felt the stab of a fibreglass splinter and then another and another and another (you get the picture) Next day it was off to the local DIY shop for a tin of varnish.
