Subject: Amazing antenna’s Outer Hebrides. Sun Jan 22, 2023 4:22 pm
I toured the Outer Hebrides last year and drove past this array near the Port of Ness on Lewis. I dont have a great deal of knowledge of antenna’s, but I wondered if anyone might be able to name the types and uses of these. It’s look a really serious setup.

Hi Rob,
I'll concur with Gary's sentiments in that we'd all love such an antenna farm or even the space to erect such beauties!
I know that a local to me Amateur Radio group (Cambs-Hams) did a DXpedition there a few years back :-
Other than that I have no idea about the setup there. (Would be good to find out more.)
Great posting with a radio interest.
All the best, Victor

I thought the Outer Hebrides was both dead and amazing. I stayed for a week in the Uists, then another week at Lewis. Absolutely no QRM. And a mean NOTHING. I thought that there was something wrong with the radio or antenna. New coax, triple checked the radio and antenna. Then after about an hour a nice lady came on with an english accent and CQ’ed. Got chatting and found out it was Ann 116AT111 in Istanbul, Turkey. 5 & 9 either was chatting to her on 12w. Then Argentina and then Andre 50CB272 in Russia. Nothing else on the radio from the UK and never was. I eventually chatted to three 11m Hams in Lewis, but it was a struggle. The mountains between Uist and Lewis kill most communications between them both. I found no operators on Uist. Even the lewis operators knew of no one there on the Uists. SUMMARY. Poor local comms and great DX.
