Subject: Newly purchased Ranger RCI 2995 DXHP Sat Dec 02, 2023 11:26 am
A few days ago I purchased the new Ranger RCI 2995 DX HP from a store in the US and started to use the radio today. I previously owned à RCI 2995 DX CF (same radio but less Watt output). My first conclusion It that the HP is massively powerful 350W PEP SSB & AM and 70W AM-FM average. I just had to open the radio, push the switch of the internal power supply to 220V for the U.K. and swap the external 7amp fuse for a 3amp one. Everything now works as it should, it is bang on frequency on receive and transmit. Sound is crystal clear and volume very powerful. Only strange thing compared to my previous 2995 DXCF is the RF gain knob that needs to be turned counterclockwise all the way back to 3-4 to obtain roughly the same receive I had on my previous radio with the dial set to 8-9. otherwise squelch becomes ineffective unless set to max. Has anyone experienced that kind of very strong reception on those radios?

They’re not that easy to get as very few of them for the moment.

Nice to hear about as well as see your new rig, so thanks for posting.
(How's the FM on this one as I do recall you had issues on the last but got it sorted.)
I wouldn't be surprised if you had to back the RF gain right down as it seems to be a modern trend to have everything "cranked to 11" on current radio designs. At least for a modern affair it does have some sensibly sized potentiometers on board (plus a fair few of them) so maybe some adjustment is possible.
If I get the chance (well, it's a case of remembering nowadays! ) I'll have a look our for some sort of service sheet or schematic for this model.
Enjoy and I wish you the best DX with it.

Hi Gilles. Nice radio. I recognize the Truckerized logo on the top from tune-up videos that popup on utube. Have not used a new unit like that one so don't know if that's typical for the RF gain, though can echo Victor on new radios re having to wind it back for normal operation on the few newish radios I own.

Good morning Victor, you do have a very good memory!…I haven’t tried Fm yet on this one as nobody around me uses it anymore. A shame as I much prefer it over SSB for local operation. A lot quieter!
Good morning SangueG. Thank you both for your advice but truth be told I don’t mind so much the radio very sensitive ears. I just play a lot more with my RF gain and volume when dxing which in fact is a lot of fun. Quite useful too as this beast gets out far when at full power and is heard by smaller stations that needs good receive on the other side for them to be heard.
Let me look at that winter challenge

The second photo that shows the internals, etc. it looks like one of the boards is bent where the "header pins" attach to the front panel display?

Hi, I did notice it as well…but since the header pins are straight, I’m afraid there is not much I can do as I would risk bending or worse snapping those pins. I’m attaching pictures of my “old” 2995 DXCF for reference and the pins on this one seem slightly bent to one side to allow the board to be straight.

I have the RCI Ranger 2950 Mirage, 10 watts AM/FM/CW and 25 watts PEP on Side-Band i run it along with a Mirage M75 amp (100 watts PEP) and a old model Antron 99, i absolutely love this set-up, it works great for me, talk all around the U. S. plus several other countries (Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada).

Like you, I have mostly been satisfied with my Rangers radios. I also love the way they look. The problem is because they can only be sourced in the USA, it is always tricky to trust a seller who will also be responsible for expanding, aligning and tuning your radio. I have had various luck the last few years. Some good, others not so good.
