Subject: Robust Fibreglass Aerials? Thu Jan 04, 2024 2:32 pm
Back in the early to mid 1990's, there were three types of fibreglass aerials for CB homebase use. The A99, Imax type (I think) and the Shakespeare Bigstick. I had the 3 section Bigstick and it went through several winters and over 100mph winds. I ended up selling it.
Are there any strong fibreglass aerials on the market, these days?
Back then, even the A99 and Imax's had a reputation of snapping in high winds.

I bought a Antron 99 back in the late 70's,i had to sand and revarnish it several times over the years but it's still up and running after being hit with 50 to 60 mph gusts, i couldn't tell you anything about the new ones, never tried them.

I don't fancy any of the new ones, as they seem expensive for what they are and seem to fail too often.

I will take a photo of the Gainmaster when I get home, because its very dry snow, not heavy wet snow, the SWR is ok.

Good morning Glenn Dog, cold temperatures here is usually around 40 degrees fahrenheit, so not too cold, summers get around a 100 degrees fahrenheit or so, so it gets pretty hot, it got up to 121 degrees fahrenheit out here one year, (i'm in the middle of the Mohave Desert here in southern California).

I'm sure I saw a photo of one recently, that had broken just above the coil due to high winds.

Personally, I would go for an aluminium aerial like a Sirio 2008/2016 or Maco. If you wish to go fibreglass, the President Himalaya is a very sturdy vertical antenna but very expensive.
