I went through a somewhat similar situation. Suddenly, I found myself alone, and my daily routine was completely disrupted. I no longer had responsibilities, and suddenly I had a lot of free time that I didn’t know how to fill. Sitting at home and falling into depression wasn’t a solution. I was in my late thirties at the time.
Although ham radio can be an interesting hobby, I think an activity that allows you to meet with people in person would be better for you.
In my case, I decided to start taking salsa classes, and later, bachata as well. (Dance course) It was really interesting, I met a lot of people, and there were plenty of social gatherings and dance parties. Looking back now, I can say that it was one of the best periods of my life. I don’t know how old you are, but even though I’m physically older now, I don’t feel that way inside. I’m always ready to try something new.

Best of luck Dave & Ian, as others have indicated it's not that difficult as long as you read the questions 2 or 3 times. Getting the foundation is the best thing I have done in many years, and now enjoy voice & FT8, it sure beats watching the TV!

Dave, regarding 'type approved equipment', I believe with the recent licence changes that foundation level licence holders are now allowed to build their own equipment.
I don't want to confuse you with any misinformation, so unless anyone else here can verify that 100%, it would be good for you to ask the question whilst you are doing the course.

Book your test asap as you might not get a date for weeks. You can pick a date that is suitable for you.

I would agree with this.
The new updated licence conditions As a Foundation licensee, you will be able to build your own equipment and access the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. There is a maximum transmit power of 2 Watts in these bands.

I passed my exam on Sunday with a score of 24 out of 26. One of the questions I got wrong was the ladder safety question, i didnt read the question properly and I knew as soon as i submitted it.
Some of the questions were new to me, even though I had done a lot of mocks, I had not seen these ones before.
Just waiting for my confirmation from the RSGB, they have to send a letter by post as email is not a thing in 2024
Good luck to Dave and others! Read the questions 2 or 3 times to avoid the "oh i know this one" and selecting an answer before fully reading the question

I'm so sorry to hear your news Dave, I spent several months preparing for the full licence exam and the night before my mum was taken into hospital with a suspected stroke. Needless to say I went to the hospital and not the exam, that was four years ago now so would have to start again from scratch.
I hope your mum makes a swift recovery and you can return to your studies at some point in the future.
Best 73 Gary.

Hi Dave,
Sorry to hear about your Mother and I send my best regards and well wishes to all.
Your examination aspirations will just have to sit on the back burner for now until things are more settled for you all. Some things in life obviously take priority and a reshuffle is required.
I still commend you for pursuing your interests so far and doing well with the Amateur Radio course.
Again my very best wishes for your Mum and yourself too during difficult times.
Take good care.
73, Victor
