Yaesu FT-891

Evening chaps. Anyone in here got a Yaesu ft-891. What a fantastic radio. I'm only using it on 80m at the moment, but in the weeks I've had it I've noticed I get very little floor noise where I usually get 9+ on any other set I've used here. I can actually here stations that are s1. At times the noise goes up to s3 but I can deal with that. The DSP is superb and does what it's supposed to do. RX is very good and getting good audio reports. I bought the mobile bracket and separation kit as I was going to use it mobile but I prefer this to my FTdx3000.

Unless a local source of QRM has shut up coincidentally around the same time you swapped it should show the same with like for like settings for RF gain, pre-amp/attenuator. If you're using an efficient antenna then even without QRM you should be seeing a noise floor above S3 on 80m in an urban setting.

I'd like to think that maybe Yaesu have done the right thing and enabled the attenuator by default on the 80m and 160m bands but I'd be surprised if they had.

I’ve had my 891 for a couple of years now and I think it’s an absolute cracker of a radio , first used in the shack for a couple of weeks just to get it set up how I wanted it then moved it to the car , updated to the latest firmware and it’s a real joy to use mobile

Only small fault is the switching from USB to LSB on say 11m , not a problem on the ham bands as it auto switches mode , small gripe

Band scope isn’t live but a quick press of a button and will swiftly sweep the band your on , tune to the peaks and happy days

Must be one of the best value HF rigs out there

I agree wholeheartedly with ur comments. I had a FT891 for 2yrs.
H/base along side my 450d. Then it went mobile in the car with
Good results all over EU! that's in the Low!. It's especially good on
40/80. But find it very sensitive on 11m. Have to turn the RF gain
down. it was paired with a MFj 901b tuner & Diamond SX200 swr
Meter. & either a K40/ Ampro 40/80 whips or my Hygain AV18vs.

Used one in my truck when I was on eurowork with a ATAS120 some good filtering in that radio it knocked a lot of noise out from the switchmode power systems to the computers stood upto the 60,000Km I put on it in the truck
I still have it has a good RX as a FTdx3000

I was looking for another radio to play with and also decided on the FT-891, as you say, it's a great radio. 

As an older person dealing with a computer driven radio it's a bit odd, but I had got used to it a bit with my FT-817ND so not a huge shock with this one. Lovely filtering and noise reduction features, one radio I can definitely recommend to others. Fairly easy to wideband too
