Subject: 30 AMP REGULATED POWER SUPPLY Sat Jul 25, 2020 5:43 pm
Hi all,
I have a QJ-1830SB regulated power supply 30 AMP 1.5-15V -DC. it has a cigarette type outlet at 10 AMPS.....a double outlet of 6 AMPS,....and a single outlet of 30 AMPS.
I am running an expanded Mckinley giving around 8 watts AM/FM.....and around 20 watts SSB.
I am going to buy a cheap ZETAGI 300P LINEAR.
I won't be running more than 5 watts AM/FM......and maybe 10 watts SSB, input to the AMP so I won't be pushing the LINEAR too hard.
Question is could I run BOTH the Mckinley and the Linear off the same power supply?
Steph

Hi Steph,
If the model you are looking at is similar to the one in the link below, Your 30amp PSU should handle the RIG and Amp at full chat but with not a lot to spare. I certainly wouldn't push it to hard as many PSU's rate their top capability but not their ability to be used at their full output continuously.

I would say yes you should. You will be running the amplifier at half power, perhaps up to 20A consumption. Just make sure its on the 30A outlet,

Graeme, thanks for your comment's.
Yeah that IS the LINEAR i,m buying and having read loads of reviews on this AMP, it wont DO what it say's on the "tin". I don't expect it to draw excessive amounts of current if I keep it in the LOW settings. I,ll be happy with 50-70 watts on AM/FM and possibly a 100 watts SSB.
cheers and 73's

The pic that redfox posted is not a b300p amp its a b303 ,I use a Zetagi B300p owned it for years and I run it from a separate PSU of 30amp and get if put 5watts in on FM on setting 1, I get about 70w out on setting 5 i get about 200w and about the same on AM , I would not put more that 5w in on any settings dont use setting 6 on AM/FM as it can burn out the amps out puts on very long overs ,on SSB max input 20w on setting 1 should get 70w to setting 6 250w /300w (maybe) Zetagi have always liked to over exaggerate the power outputs ,my radios I use which is a very old original President Lincoln which is set 1w to 20w AM/FM variable and 20w SSB pep also a Midland 8001xt which is set at 5w AM with a 10w swing and 3w to 10w FM variable and I run those on another separate PSU of 25amp ,so this might give you a idea of what you really need .

Hi Martin,
Well spotted with the model, thankfully I was only referring to something similar in the Zetagi range and picking up the specs for reference. Glad you were able to provide a more detailed input for Steph.
Cheers
Graeme.

No worries Graeme I didn't want him to read those specs and do something wrong with his new amp, over the years I've seen people but PSU and Amps and it not working out because they didn't ask first so I just thought I would give my experience with mine.

Martin, NOTED.
Thanks for your input,I didn't notice the model either but the ZETAG B300P ....IS the one i,m after because of the "receive" PRE-AMP on it.
My thinking on running the RIG, and AMP, on the SAME power supply is based on the fact that with the Mckinley on USB in (expanded) it draws about 4.5-5 amps "keyed/talk" so my thinking was that if I run the AMP at around 4-5 watts "input" and the AMP on setting one- or two it would probably only draw 15 amp's maybe peaking 20 amps, but I suppose that is near the limit.

OK Steph that sounds OK how your gonna do it mate ,just a little more info/advice as for the pre-amp they dont work very good plus also when switched on it dont just pick out the far off voice /signal if there is any interference or any other noise on the channel/frequency it will amplify that too, so there only useful if the channel your on is quiet. I've had my B300P for a long time and never had any problems TBH I put a old computer cooling fan on top to help it keep cool when using for long periods

that's the best way fan on the kicker radio stays cool no stress and the kicker stays cool as they get red hot not red but hot they drop power and then send all nasty things and it might go into your audio and you will not want that
