Found an old Sirio ML145 (with the PL259 Magmount) - has anyone any experience of using this antenna? I do know they were popular in the 80's, wondering what peoples thoughts are as spare antenna for the misses car, worth restoring with a new whip? can get replacement whip for £11. Any comments welcome. 108CT1529 Andy

Whip is stainless steel so should just need a quick rub down with some wire wool. They're a good antenna but the magmount has a common fault. Just undo the four screws on the top of the magmount and take off the socket. Check on the underside that the braid is still connected to the brass earth tab. If you've a hot glue gun put a blob of glue around the coax on the inside where it comes through the grommet to stop the coax twisting which pulls the braid off that brass tab.

I need a new Whip (located dealer that will sell for £11) for it as it is missing so no bother with that. Thanks for all of the above i was intending to strip it down and put new coax cable and plug as it is very old, and i imagine that the coax has got damp in and the earth braid gone off colour. so i will rewire it. Thanks for your advice. Andy 108CT1529 2M0AIV

Still have it like i said it lives on the BBQ outside my shack. The pl fitting it will take many aerials. First used it on a ranger 2950 on 555 up the local mountain but not been up there for nearly 2 years now but will go again and the ml145 will be put to use again. Worked well in the past and don't see why it won't work well for years to come. Might fit new coax to it but defo check the base connection that was the only fault with them.

Hi, my pni 145 mag mount as gone quiet. Need to check connection but this version doesn't have four screws as posted by7 "Northern Crusader". It's got one screw underneath though. Before I break it, how do I get into to check. I'm fingers and thumbs at the moment. Cheers.

Has it got the plastic covering the base. You might have to peal it off and re-glue it back on or buy a rubber boot for it save scratching you car roof.

Cheers. Will get back once I've took a look. The foil bottom looks peelable and it came with a rubber boot.

I peeled base off cleaned an resoldered earth tab replacing rg58 coax - then gaffer tape to replace the sealed foil and bought a rubber boot for 4 quid to protect my car. Job done

Works just fine without - all of my mag mounts have rubber boots to protect the vehicle - it’s not necessary to make contact with the metal of the car with the antenna to make the ground plane that the vehicle naturally provides. Let me know how you get on with it
