Subject: Zetagi b300p issue Sun Dec 26, 2021 12:43 pm
Ok it’s Boxing Day and I’m bored so I thought I’d wire up my brand new out of the box amp. I’ve ran a 40 amp cable from the battery into the car and I’m ready to wire it to the amp I thought test testing the continuity of the cabling was the next thing all good so far. Got the amp out off the box stripped the ends off the wires and tinned them with solder and put (for now) a scotch block on the end. I’ve tested for my peace of mind continuity and found that there is a dead short between pos and neg, now this may sound like a stupid question but can that be right ??? No power has been connected by me at anytime all I’ve done is get it out off the box and put a scotch block on the ends of the wires Like I said it may be obvious it’s not right I’ve had one years ago in my truck and never had a problem but don’t remember this being a problem and don’t want to power it up before I can contact moonraker who I bought it from
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the rapid reply The answer is no. Tried rocking the switch’s and firmly taping the box but nothing changed I’m sure it can’t be right. I’m hoping that somebody might be able to pull theirs out of line and do a quick test for me. I don’t intend to put power to it until I’m sure. Once again thanks Alan for the rapid reply.

Hi Macca
Just got my B300P out of its box.
Checked mine and there was no continuity. Could there be a stray strand of copper bridging the positive & negative in the scotch block?

Have gone back to my B300P.
Probe on the positive wire with the amp on or off, no buzzer. Probe on the negative wire with the amp on or off, buzzer sounds when I touch the chassis, fixing screws, the outside of the SO239 sockets and the heatsink.
I'm with you, I expect things to work straight out the box too.
Don't worry about the rant, I'm used to it

Hi ray That’s what it’s supposed to do if all is good I think against my better judgement I’m going back to the amp and take the back off and have a probe around I can’t put power to it it’ll burn something for sure. I’m hopeing it’s an obvious in your face problem and a 2 second fix cos moonraker are closed until the 4th and by the time I’ve sent it back they’ve checked it and sent out a replacement (I hope) could be mid January. I’ll keep you posted and thanks for taking the time to have look for me.

It’s going to be sent back. It’s shorting out everywhere I test so I guess I’ll have to wait to play. Not happy.

Hi Alan It is what it is I did try for over an hour to ring them with no answer then my wife reminded me it’s bank holiday Monday so I’ve gone to the pub. I’ll be happier soon. I’ve got no problem taking it back myself and waiting for them to test it , ok it’s two hours away from Bournemouth but at least I can play with the rig on the way there

I've used Moonraker in the past. They're not particularly far from where I live. I've always found them very helpful and good to deal with so I wouldn't expect any problems from them.

Handy if you can go to them. Where i live i have no chance of that and have to rely on post/couriers. I think tomorrow is also a bank holiday not 100% on that.

Hi guys Thanks for the reply’s it’s good to know that moonraker are cool I’ve not dealt with them before and I didn’t want to go Down the”it’s user error route” which is why I tested the continuity first because experience most defiantly comes with age. But you know when you’ve got a plan in your head and it all goes to rat poop. I’m new back on to the radio after a 20ish year break and am gutted on how dead it is in Bournemouth and the surrounding area so the plan was to have a play during the Xmas break while the people I would normally miss are off work and bored like me I appreciate a b300 is a bit over the top for local ish contacts but we “and I’m sure most people “ have so much qrm that just to get into a qso with a guy down the road can be a struggle. I can’t believe how dead it is around here for the first month or so I thought the radio was a bad un too. I have to travel to higher ground to just to get a rig check. Do you remember the days when you’d struggle to find a clear channel. Getting old sucks

Sorry only just seen your reply. I think the wife will kill me if I spend any more cash at the moment for some strange reason she can’t grasp why I want to spend my time speaking to new friends while coronation street is much more like the real world

Hey, just wondered how you got on with Moonraker, did you manage to get it sorted? Was wondering if they said what the issue was?
Reading this thread, I looked up some schematics (there's more than one layout as that amp has been around for a long time and has had some changes) and was trying to work out what might of happened just for my own education. Am definitely no expert, can only work through simple circuits, but came to the conclusion that a polarity protection diode was faulty, or had blown (there is one shown on most of the schematics). So question is if it's a bad unit that escaped factory quality control, or if someone returned it to the shop "unused" and it was sold on without being checked over.
I won't push the foundation licence idea on you, but will say that I have enjoyed the past few months since passing. And as for cost, other than the exam fee, with the equipment you have it will cost nothing to get on to 10m and have a great time next spring/summer during E skip season alongside 11m.

Hi Moonraker we’re spot on no problems they swapped it for a new one. The guy took it outback and tested it and just said that it had a dead short inside don’t think he had the time to investigate further as it was the first day back after the holidays and they had only been open ten minutes when I rolled up. Funny thing was the new one came in a box a lot less worn than mine was so perhaps it could of been returned but not tested before being sent out again like you said, it also had more paperwork with it.
The extra paperwork states no more than 3 watts on position 6 , that can’t be right can it.
I did my foundation back in 1990 and haven’t done anything about renewing since they went paperless years ago. I was a g7
