Hi everyone,
I have just returned to cb after an absence of nearly 40 years, having been lucky enough to have seen the explosion of cb radio in the early 80's. I have just bought a Crt ss9900 and red devil and installed them in my campervan so I hope to find some high ground and make some long distance contacts. I am in East Grinstead, West Sussex and my call sign is Apha1. I look forward to chatting to some local breakers, although with so many bands and frequencies available to me now, it is very hard to find anyone modulating at all : Please could I request a call sign number too? Many thanks, Phil

No worries at all there Phil.
We're all just radio enthusiasts helping like minded people out where we can.
There's many members here at Charlie Tango who were away from the radio interest for some time but enjoying the return. (Myself very much included.)
Get yourself and that campervan atop a big hill when the propagation (skip) is good, fire up your 9900 on SSB and have some fun!

Thanks Victor, that's the plan for the spring/summer. I'm thinking Box Hill in Surrey and Beachy head in Eastbourne for some decent height

Hi Phil, A warm welcome from me as well, not a million miles from you. If you plan on evening sessions I can highly recommend the Southern & South coast Net on a Thursday evening from your home QTH, the net controller is usually static mobile in Ashdown Forest which is only about 6miles away.

Thanks Tony, it sounds great but are there any nets on the weekend as I work nights and can't get on in the evenings unfortunately?

There is one that I know of on a Saturday evening chaired from Devils Dyke on Ch 26 UK band, although not really my cup of tea as the main aim seems to be getting your name in the log.
Also a Sunday morning net from Kent (not sure how high you are ASL) but may well get in. This one is good and often have a few European stations calling in. You can see full details Here simply click on the network name to see details.

If you look to the left of my post you will see 'Brighton' so about 20 miles, send me a PM on here with a time and frequency and we could try a contact if you like. I check every couple of hours so not much notice required. I am only homebase and surrounded by the south downs, but some directions I reach quite well.
Cheers, Tony

Phil, I guess it will have to be another time I did respond to your call but assume all the other stations were blasting through, especially Olli 56PJ004 who was giving me S9+20.

Sorry Tony, I didn't hear you or much at all on there, I am getting so much noise! (S9 ) I think I am going to look at a homebase antenna which I can fix to my garage wall and hook up to the radio in my van. I think this will give me a far better chance when static. I don't have the option of setting up indoors as I am in a flat unfortunately. A silver rod will probably do the trick I'm thinking

@StevieG I know I am off topic but I couldn’t help notice you own a superb Colt Excalibur SSB radio…it was the radio I owned in the early 80’s and I was loving it. In fact it’s her that pushed me back into the hobby a year ago as I was looking for one out of pure nostalgia but failed to find any. I then stumbled upon the Ranger RCI base stations 2995 DX which look similar and went ahead and purchased one. But enough rambling. I just wanted to ask you if you wouldn’t mind posting a few photos of yours as I’ve never seen one anymore anywhere. Ultimate radio porn for me

A belated welcome to the group Phil. A silver rod is a great cheapish option that should do you well. Skip traffic aside, the amount of local CB on air chats are nothing like they used to be, but if all quiet put a call out.. there are still people listening and I have had people come back to me occasionally when the channels seemed all dead.
Great rig Steve! Gilles, your newer Ranger version is sounding great too, I heard you call on the T5 yesterday afternoon and went back to you but a station from Sicily went over the top of me. I QSY's with you both and listened for a bit, you both did very exchanging email addresses. Back in the day I used to dread spelling Cirencester over the air, but if the other person did not get it quite right the QSL card usually still made it to me, however spelling an email address is vital to get exact.. I think that is harder. Well done, you're a great operator.

Good morning SangueG, thank you for the flowers (even if more deserved by the radio than the operator). But very appreciated nevertheless! I’m sorry I didn’t pick your call up yesterday before I QSY with the Sicilian station. Funny as often on USB, when the skip permits, you can hear faraway stations much louder than local operators. I probably would have heard you, had you called on the QSYed frequency?… I hope I will hear you next time and respond to your call. We are neighbours after all!
Like you I start sweating when I’m asked the name of my hometown as I almost always stumble halfway through the spelling of Cirencester. For some reason it is a confusing one to order in your head. It gets even worse when the listening station can’t hear it all because of QRM and makes me repeat the dreaded name For some reason emails are a bit better…but yesterday I was hoping he had an account on ClusterDX! anyway I was lucky this time around as QRM was low and the operator was keen and patient. Wish I’d heard you and came back though. Next time hopefully! (for some other strange reason I seem to be able to pick up more easily stations based in Swindon than in Cirencester) never figured that one out. Part of the joy of operating CB/HF rigs I guess
