Hi all, can some one tell me when I adjust the power output my my radio, it shows the percentage.
Is this the percentage of the maximum output for the mode that Im using,ie setting power ouput at 10%
on usb, would 10 watt output.

Cheers

Oooh you don't want to be delving into the complexities of RF power measurement Andy unless you're a complete tech nerd or have masochistic tendencies. Wink Very Happy

100 Watt rig, 10% power.....it's about 10 Watts, or thereabouts, near as dammit, that'll do. power - Icom ic 7300 power 1f44d

(I shall forgo the usual P.E.P, R.M.S, AVG arguments, measuring into a dummy load as measuring into an antenna is meaningless or the never ending question 'Foundation' Ham operators receive with the typical "Are you sure you're running ten watts?")

Yep, percentage of max power....sort of!

SSB adds a few more complexities, but in general, 100w radio, so 10% is 10w(ish).

Hi All, thank you for all your replies.
I have ordered an amplifier for my radio as I have been told, that using the Icom on the 11 metre band, especially on a higher output can burn out the filters,so am getting an amp which only needs approximately 5w input. So needed to know, what power my radio was putting out as not to over load the amp.

Thanks once again.

You could plug a calibrated power meter in to check output and mark where you want it set with a bit of tape.

Turn the power all the way down.
It won't go any lower than 5w.

Won’t work on a 7300, as power is just one function of the multi-function knob, which just spins and spins, and you read the level/setting off a pop-up display.

In a word yes, but upon testing on mine it seems that into a dummy load it's about right (or just under...) for example, 10% is just under 10w. You'll no doubt lose more of that power as it travels down along the coax/feeder so it will more than likely a fair bit lower by the time it reaches the base of the antenna.

Why? It's 100W, you've no need for an amp. 300W, which is what I suspect you're going for, may be 200W more which sounds a lot but it's only 3dB and will barely give you an extra S point, on a S meter calibrated to the IARU standard it won't even do that as that's 6dB per S point.

Hi,I bought a 100w amp as I have been told, using my Icom on 11 meters at full power will damage the filters in my radio as radio not designed for this band.so by running my radio only on 5w output, I use the amp to up the output to 100w

Seen that about running on 11m but i think it's a load of bull to put cb users off using HF sets for cb.
Don't use mine on that band as i have my mk-1 Lincoln for that if i need it.

The schematic shows the bandpass filters on the 7300 having one range at 22MHz to 29.99Mhz so well within adequate spec of CB/11m frequencies.

Tinges of roast pork smells hanging in the air from the 'Ham-Police'. Wink

(FM would probably put you in the realms of full duty-cycle though.)
