Subject: Coax upgrade worth it? Sun Dec 03, 2023 9:22 pm
Hi guys, I plan on putting a few quid into my set up.
I'm currently running a crt6900v on a 5/8 vertical thunderpole. I have a swr of 1.4 in good weather conditions. I cannot get the swr any lower which is annoying.
I am going to get an amplifier for long distance but was thinking of the overlooked coax, it's pretty new general rg58, do you think an upgrade to rg8x would be beneficial? My total run is about 10meters. Worth doing? Also still considering the antron 99.
Any advice?

Would upgrading the coax be beneficial and worth doing? Not a Yes or No answer, just some aspects to think about to help you make a decision. The following are just my opinions and suggestions, other's may differ...
Upgrading to RG8X, RG213, or better, will result in less of your power being lost in your feedline both on rx and tx. But, my writeup HERE aside, about how every mW can matter, at the length you are looking at you probably won't notice a difference. Lookup coax loss charts on the net. Some will show big differences between types, but they usually put data for 100' which is about 3x longer than what you are using.
If you are going to put a massive amp inline, you might need to upgrade the coax. Generally, the thicker the coax the more power it can handle. Coax max power specs are available on the net.
Some higher grade coax types have much more dense or double shielding on them which can sometimes help reduce unwanted noise on receive.
Re your SWR, 1.4 is good, don't get hung up on it, but if you don't have one already, a choke on your feedline near where it plugs into your antenna might help with this.
Hope the advice helps you, and sorry it wasn't a straight Yes or No.

That's a huge help thanks so much, hadn't thought of a choke, I have some research to do. i won't be going crazy on the amplifier, maybe just 100w or so.

As Neal said don't get hung up on the swr yours is ok. Coax i use the 8x on my hf aerials and 314 on my 2m/70cm aerial but only because i got it for not a lot. If you are going to change it then 8x will be fine on that length i would say.

Thanks again guys, I had a spare few quid burning a hole on my pocket so I just treated myself to the antron 99, my thunderpole was ok but it was bent and I didn't like how it looked all cocked to the side.
Might do the coax at the same time, the rg58 I've currently got is only about 6 months old so I'm sure it's ok for a while longer, as you say, it's not enough of a length to worry about, when it's old I'll upgrade to rg8x.
I'll let you know how it goes up, if it comes in time it's my Saturday morning job.
