Subject: Very annoying problem FT991 solved (USB Issue) Wed Aug 21, 2024 10:06 am
Since getting my Yaesu FT991 I thought connecting it up via USB would be a breeze for FT8, nothing but problems. Firstly, when I switched the radio on, my USB keyboard would disconnect briefly or JTDX would lose all the settings and quite often not transmit even though the transceiver would show as connected. I tried ferrites everywhere to no avail and was at my wits end with the problem.
Yesterday I tidied up all my cables and had one final thought, rather than using my powered USB hub to connect the set I plugged it straight into a spare socket at the back of the computer. Bingo! Radio has connected perfectly every time since, no keyboard problems and JTDX works like a charm. What was beginning to be a chore and spoiling my enjoyment has now been solved by the simplest of solutions.

Hi Mark,
Aren't those type of issues so frustrating even though the final solution seems so simple!
Glad that you got sorted in the end though.
If you don't mind I've added 'USB Issue' to your posting title just in case anyone is searching the forums for similar problems.
Thanks for posting, sure to help someone else one of these days.
All the best, Victor

That would have been about the only question i could have answered straight away. Did the same thing myself when i first started with FT4/8. And in the last week or so a local station to me called round asking questions on this and he had done the same thing.

I'll bet it's more common than people think Alan. I have a few USB hubs laying about now and only one of them seems to be up to the job so have been there myself.

Another thing that will give strange problems with ft8 is having 2 radios on usb plugged in at the same time. Don't even have to have one of them on just plugged in. Don't say it i know what your thinking lol.

It turns out the problem reared it's ugly head again, turn on radio and JTDX would not be connected, COM ports would show in device manager. Would switch everything off and back on a few times, and it would eventually connect.
Stumbled across some detailed instructions for setting up the FT991/A for FT8 which stated do not plug in radio before installing drivers, it seems to apply even if radio isn't powered in any way. Uninstalled drivers then reinstalled as directed and have not had an issue for a few days.
