Subject: XIEGU VG-4 multi band vertical antenna. Tue Oct 22, 2024 2:38 pm
I recently bought the multi band Xiegu VG-4 antenna (10m - 15m - 20m - 40m)
Today the weather was kind to me so I constructed it and built a temporary tilting base.
The contruction was simple and I managed it single handed.
Straight out of the box, and guessing the tuning during construction, the mid band SWR was 1.2 on 10m 1.2 on 20m and 2.1 on 40m I didn't try 15m.
Eager to try it out before tuning with the NanoVNR, I replied to a CQ on 28.540 with my Xiegu G90 (20w usb) - LZ2RS gave me a 5/9+ so at least I know the antenna is working.
I will add to this post when I have tuned the antenna to optimum on all bands.

Hi Deb,
Very well done getting that little monster up on your own!
I especially like your timber tilt mast.
Sounds like it's working as it should and look forward to hearing your reports on it. I hope it serves you well and wish you much DX with it.
All the very best, Victor

Great install Deb! Do let us know how it performs one of the biggest challenges for our members is a decent antenna in a small footprint.
Best 73 Gary.

Thanks Victor, I will give a review in due course. My aim was to devise a tilting base that I could bear down on the short end to raise the antenna. I'm pleased to report that it works
Thanks Gary. I do understand the small footprint thing, but this antenna needs space when horizontal for construction and tuning.

The VG-4 was up and down half a dozen times today. It could do with a tiny bit more fettling to get it exactly resonant on the parts of the bands that I'm interested in, but I'm happy with where it is now. My 100w tuner amplifier (XPA125B) easily matches on all bands
Here are the results without my tuner amp in the line and without the G90 tuner activated:
40m 1.5 at 7.170 20m 1.2 at 14.230 (SSTV frequency) 15m 1.1 at 21.300 10m 1.1 at 28.500
The box it was delivered in was damaged. My postal service had taped up the ends, but all the parts were present and in good order. All parts are well manufacture and look to be durable. The installation manual is easy to follow with all parts labelled. Tuning on 10-15-20 only needed a tiny bit of tuning. 40m was way out but soon brought into resonance by shortening the top sections by about 10cm.
The noise floor is very low, in fact slightly lower than my 10m T2LT which is very quiet. On 10m it performs roughly the same as my T2LT.
No guy ropes needed unless you expect very high winds.
I found that initial tuning with it horizontal was the best way, then vertical after each fine tuning.
Ideal for anyone with a need for a small footprint antenna, but you would need space for dropping it down for tuning or expected high winds.
For the price it's a very good antenna that performs well on all the bands it's intended for.

Congratulations! It looks very similar to my Sirio 2008 except for the top hat. Well done Sir!
