what mobile antenna to buy?

hi all

not had much luck with my home base set up so decided to go mobile with my SS6900n, there is that many antennas to choose from so any advice would be a big help, also same applies to SWR metre too

Had to smile on ur post. I had the same problem 2yrs ago when we
dropped off the Hi. My H/base Qrm went fro' the roof. So I packed
H/base & went mob' & static mobile. For mobile I used my trusty
K40's which I've used since '76. I had 2. 1 tuned to legal FM & the
other tuned to SSB lows & Super lows with good results got across
most of EU. including Corsica. Other op's use Wilson 1000 etc. Check website's of Nevada/Radioworld/Knight's for spec's/prices. If ur going static mob. A lot of op's use
T2LT's details on FBook or Club w/sites. Myself I used a Hygain
AV18vs a Ham Multiband 80/10m. with a car-plate & Inverted V.

Ray. you cannot go far wrong witth a Sirio HP4000 or any of that ilk.
I've had one which I trimmed to 28.500 MHz Usable from 27.5 to 29.6 (SWR is creeping up on mids (2.2:1) but as original it will be bang on for both Mids and the UKFM. On hills I've got some decent distances on the ssb nets. eg Lincoln to Lancaster

I use a Wilson 1000, it's very comparable to any other loaded 1/4 wave mobile antenna such as the aforementioned Sirio. Unfortunately quite expensive though.

Sirio 4000. Don't go for the 5000. Length wise and performance wise they're identical, the only difference is that the 5000 has a wider bandwidth below 2:1 but the 4000 has ample enough to cover from EU CEPT Ch1 to the top of UKFM 40.

To keep it simple:

Length is what matters. Avoid like the plague anything that is 2,3,4ft long. See 5ft whip as the minimum, 6ft plus if you can run to it. Stainless steel whip rather than rigid antenna like a Firestik so you're not worried about it hitting overhead branches or overheight barriers (as long as it isn't using a magmount).

The difference between a Sirio 3000 which is 1.8m /5.9ft long and a Sirio 5000 which is 30cm/1ft longer is about a S point on a CB with the needle type S meter when I did side by side testing. I'd expect that kind of performance difference between similar different antenna lengths between various models.

Hello, my first post so go easy got my trusty '92 Paddy and Max Autoquest motorhome that I want to put a cb radio in. Never used a cb radio before, researching at mo, thing is I don't want to drill into my van so re antenna I realise taller is better but if it was going up on my roof could I go for a smaller one with magnetic base and could I travel with it in place?

Welcome to CTDX. How tall is your Camper? You could fit a K40
on the roof with a mag- mount the whip will bend a lot in difficult
situations or use the quick detachable coil for low carparks etc.
Or you could go for twin mirror Ant's on your mirror arms like we
had on our Trucks in '70's/80's i.e. 10/4 Good Buddy but for these
You will need a Co- phase cable. You could fit a rear Ant. on your
Bike rack @ rear but will be directional to rear/side. Hope this will

It's about 8'6'' so pretty high really, I think you have confirmed I was thinking along the right track and I will have a look at the K40.
I know Brimstage well, my sis in law works at Brimstage Brewery it's a lovely part of The Wirral. You would be sad if you saw the site of the old tech it's all full of modern flats and tiny box houses that nobody seems to settle in, they all seem to be constantly up for sale.
