Subject: Testing for SWR on USB? Mon May 30, 2022 1:10 pm
Another newbie question. When using a k-po swr171 meter on my McKinley export mod radio, I can't test the the swr on Upper Side Band as I'm unable to set the swr meter in fwd to set...In fact, it doesn't move the needle at all🥴 When I key up the Mike neither needles move or just a tiny bit and only 2 points show on the SRF needle. The built in swr meter on the McKinley shows 1.0.... Is there a problem with USB on my radio, or are we good here?? Radio is less than a month old and swr has been checked regularly and has never been above 1.4 max Thanks for your anticipated help Regards smiley Miley

It's because there's no carrier on SSB, the needle only moves when you talk so all the transmit power is put into speech, that's why it's more efficient. Just use AM or FM, the results will be the same for the same frequency, if it's OK on AM/FM it'll be good for SSB too.

Paul, have you checked the Tango Echo Group on Facebook or elsewhere, I'm sure they run a weekly network and they are holding a Field Day this sunday 5th June. (Freq: 27.375 usb - 10am till 4pm)?

Hi Tony. Thanks for your response. I don`t do Facebook, never have. But I`ll keep an eye out for this group on Sunday. I`m currently looking @ leisure batteries as this off grid stuff has really caught my attention. Regards smileymiley

Yes I understand, but as you stated "I went 350 ASL today trying to get a contact ...zilch" I thought Sunday would be a good time to get some contacts as the Field day is only a few miles from your QTH it's on Two Tree Island and a good way to gain contacts! There should be lots of operators on SSB/FM Also I only use Facebook for CB/Radio groups.

No worries, maybe I didn't make it clear but I meant there should be a lot of activity on the airwaves to make contacts.

Small world isn’t it Smileymiley,Didn’t notice you was that part of the world.I’m off to Baz this morning to see family. That net Tonyvic mentioned is The South east Sunday Morning net run by James 26JS07 Starts at 11am on 27.285 USB. Most of the stations on there are over Essex way but I did heard a 44 division South Africa call in last Sunday (Crazy),It’s run by the Thames Estuary Dx group. This Sunday 6th June is a special TE QE2 field day for the Queens Platinum Jubilee.10am - 4pm on Two tree island. Callsign 26TE/QE2 on Frequency 27.375 USB.You can pop over and meet the lads if your that way for a tea and refreshments. Cheers Tom. 26CT4029
