Hi Anthony. It's possible you could get many differing answers. It can be a contentious subject, and what works for one person might not work well for another.
Generally though, if you want to work mainly local you'll want a vertical of some sort, and for best results the taller the better placed as high as you can, in the clear as much as you can. For longer distance sky wave skip contacts it doesn't matter so much, but the same general rules apply.. the larger the antenna and the higher it is, the better it will tend to work. That said, there are more than one of us here with just bits of wire in our lofts that are working the world, you don't always need much, HERE's a latest great example post.
If you go for a shop bought vertical forget the advertised gain figures, a 1/2 wave is a 1/2 wave, it's impossible for one to have more than a negligible gain over another. What you will be paying for is brand names and construction quality, but what you might get on some of the cheaper 1/2 waves like the silver rods is a little more bandwidth than the Solarcon / Antron types because of their metal girth.. but again only a touch.

Some people manage great DX with an Antron. I think you're near the sea? If so I am sure it will do you well.
