Subject: Black out lcd & power fail . Tue Oct 03, 2023 1:56 pm
Hello. I have a ss9900, as I was transmitting , the lcd went black and the power momentarily went of & came back on, what would cause this ? The radio is new, ive run it on a 13.8 v and checked all connections.
It's homebased. I've been advised that I need a 30amp power supply. This has happened twice, would like a second opinion please. Many thanks

Hi Pauline.
I have a CRT6900V - The SS9900's baby brother. I was running this using a 10amp power supply, and if I turned it up to the full 40watts on FM and keyed up, the 6900's display would dim. The SS9900 does 50 watts - so I would definitely say go for a minimum of a 30amp regulated power supply.
I now have a 40amp Nevada regulated power supply that powers the 6900, a superstar 3900 and a pre-amp. No more troubles with the displays dimming.

The CRT 9900 draws 12 amps on tx according to the manufacturer. So you ideally need a 15 amp constant power supply minimum to run it.
Alan pilot advised you to get a 30 amp power supply to cover you for any future purchases of ham radio that require more amps. Not because you need that much for that radio.
I don't know how much knowledge you have on the subject and you may be getting confused with information overload whilst learning . So to sum up. They all run on 13.8 volts They will all power up on a 13.8 volt power supply even one as low as say 3 amp. It's when you transmit and need to draw more power that the problems start. A normal CB with 4 watt output power will transmit on a 3 watt PS but most people will probably use a 5watt - 7 watt surge. A CRT 9900 putting out 50 or 60 watts needs a 12 watt PS so a 15 watt is needed minimum or a 20 watt to be safer.
Think of a little 1000 cc (1 ltr) car driving flat out at 100 mph, it'll blow the engine sooner or later. A 3000 cc (3 ltr) could cruise at 100mph.
30 amp is more than enough for your 9900
It won't be struggling to run your radio and it will future proof you for ham radio in the future.

I am a newbie , 80's 90's cb , getting back into cb , re learning, never had a homebase. As I am learning I do get confused with info, and ask for a second opinion. Alan has given me much needed information, I've been advised 20,30, 50 amp . Thank you for your explanation.

Could it be a bad connection in the power cable/fuseholder, etc? Any of these could cause the radio to power off and back on again...
