Hi Miura I had my rig set up with a suitable thin screw driver ,as Nicky had told me the pots are very delicate so be careful . I had another radio set up near by so could listen as I turned the pot up. The Mckinley had a Kpo NM532 mic set between 1/4 and 1/2 way turned up. As I did a count down you turn the pot up until the modulation sounds good as Nicky said I went to far and the audio cut out so just turn it back until the audio came back then a little more so your not at the cut off point.
Hope this helps
Regards John

I can't answer from experience but the K-PO mic seems a good replacement for many, especially the 6900.

Hiya skyrider
Hi from all I have seen and read about it seems the NM-532 KPO power mic is a good around choice , have the mic set about 1/4 to 1/2 way when you do the modulation turn up and my choice was to set the mic gain on rig down a couple notches seems best for me. Hope this helps .
Regards John

Definitely K-PO 532. It gives the punch the standard mic lacks. Never try to fit an Astatic to a President McKinley as they can’t work together for some reason. On the other hand Rangers radios work best with the Astatic D104-M6B. Go figure!

Hi all, found an issue with a McKinley recently that caused much of the same modulation problem that you described. found R221 open circuit to Q203. this affected SSB modulation and RF power. I removed rR221 cleaned the contact pads and re-soldered, everything worked fine after. Hope this will help someone in the future. solder dry joints can be hard to find.

how do you know your modulation is bad ?
I can confirm John's Modulation is terrible on ssb but on fm it's fine (R5) but quiet. I think I have a recording of it, will post it tomorrow if I have.
I found the recording but I bet John doesn't know what he altered between the first and last part of the clip! (The last 15-20 seconds is about the best I have heard even on the many tests that we have done with just the two of us). Johns Audio
