Yes this would work, as it does cover the American (FCC) 40 channel FM/AM allocation. As a bonus you would also get the 40 UKFM channels and some extra European channels as well.
BUT. . . . . . This radio is not type approved for use in the America market and would be deemed illegal.
If you want to stay legal, then I would suggest the President Randy 2 FCC handy walkie talkie.

Yes it is 4 watts.
The FCC have not approved it for use in America, so this radio would be deemed illegal.
Not that the FCC does much about enforcing the rules when you have the 1 kilowatt or more stations and see all the 10 meter radios opened up to work on the CB band.
