Hi guys,

I have connected my external speakers to my CRT 7900v.
They work fine until I key the mic when I get a loud buzzing sound, any ideas how I can sort this?
It's a pair of Creative PC speakers and would this still happen with an external dedicated radio speaker from a ham store?

Thanks

Tam

Hi Tam. Speakers probably picking up RF when you key up. I have experienced similar with PC speakers. RF could be being picked up on the speaker cables (signal cable or power cables) or could be the cheap/sensitive electronics inside the speaker picking it up. If you've got any clip on ferrites you could try them on the cables to see if that helps.

A dedicated radio speaker less is likely to be effected, depending how much RF you have in the shack when you key up.

Hi Tam,

As Neal has mentioned they pick up RF especially so the typical PC powered/amplified speakers which tend to not have any RFI suppression built in.

You don't need to have any sort of fancy (expensive) speaker hooked up for better monitoring and the cheaper non amplified or passive units will suffice. Many here have hooked up ordinary non-powered 'hi-fi' speakers to their radios and others (including myself) have even built their own.

All the best,
Victor
